Seriously, have you ever thought about it? Why did someone decide to light some weeds on fire and inhale them? I'm a smoker, but I just don't understand why anyone out of the blue would decide to smoke a plant (tobacco or marijuana). I understand why we continue, but why centuries ago did we start?

I don't understand why even now someone picks up that first cigarette and decides to smoke. It just seems so completely foolish to me. Why even try it? And most people cough and stuff when they first try one, so why do they continue until they are addicted? I really don't understand it.

Sorry, I know this isn't the answer you are seeking, it does seem very strange that way back when someone would decide to roll up some plants and smoke them.

The pattern of standard cigarette is the same from long time ago, your question shows your will to change the style, it doesn' t matter what kind of tobacco you want to use, so many people try to change the trend of smoking some introduce new style,Some fails,Some become popular as now! like cigar, smoking pipes, smoking in a bottle kind tube (Sulfee) so there were quite a few different ways, their is a kind (Huqqa) smoke filtered through water device made up of glass, o top their is a fire / tobacco, at the bottom water in a pot all connected once you inhale air / smoke comes out after filtered through water.

When the European's came from England they discovered tobacco plants and the Indians showed them how to use them... And since people started smoking the nicotine in tobacco makes it very difficult to stop.

What else would they do with tobacco, except smoke it? The Indians must have started it with their peace pipe. At least then it was safe! They smoked the tobacco without any chemicals added. We had to grow and get really smart to add the crap to slowly kill you off.
I would think it wouldn't have been addictive either.

Centuries ago it was called the peace pipe. Ever see any fights break out after they broke out the peace pipe? I thought the Marlboro man was really cool myself. Indians were smart as well. :-) Also tobacco was more pure no additves...done as a ritual more than a habit.. have a good one.

We start out of curiosity or peer pressure. We continue because it feels good and is one of the most addictive drugs known.

i believe that it probably started as some spiritual ritual or some means of worship. Maybe even just to get 'high' or something of that nature. Interesting question.

I believe the American Indians taught the Eurpoeans to smoke.

If this is true, I'd say they got ample revenge for all the wrongs done to them.
