Trane and American Standard are the same except for the name. I would not get anything above 13 SEER, which is the minimum required. 10 SEER may still be availabe, but manufacturers can't make them any more (it's a fact, check the link below). Get a 80% efficiency furnace. The 90%'s aren't worth it - they are more complex (dual heat exchangers, more sophisticated controls, etc.), and you know what that means.

Lots of responses - most F.O.S. (You know....they're full of a noxious substance) If you're in an area of high A/C usage go with the l3 SEER. Otherwise the 10 SEER should serve you well enough. If you are in an area with high heating hours I would recommend a forced-air furnace with an efficiency rating of 92-95%. I hesitate to recommend a specific brand since they all must pass certain standards before they can be sold to the public. Any brand should work well for you IF it's properly installed. Good luck.

Here's a tip: go with a heat pump and you'll see all the money you spend getting it returned in under 4 years by lower energy bills.
High-efficiency gas furnaces are A MAXIMUM of 95% efficient.
Heat pumps are around 300% efficient.
As for brand I suggest the follwing options: Carrier or York.
And finally, try for at least a 10 EER/SEER unit.
To answer the question of why heat pump: At today's fuel prices, why not?

High efficiency on both A/C and furnace. Decent brands would be like Bryant, Lennox, Carrier, a Puron system is nice, but that is starting to get in to a very pricey range.
