I work in a job where I manage hourly employees. Corporate says I am not allowed to elaborate on why the employee is fired in fear of a lawsuit. How are people going to improve if they never learn what they did wrong? I am hoping that people take a moment to reflect on what we went over when they were repremanded prior to termination, but is it more likely that they just see me as a jerk and there is nothing wrong with their performance.

My guess is that they are at first totally pissed off and are looking at you as an unreasonable "jerk". But with time comes reflection, followed hopefully by the realisation that they were in fact wrong. So hopefully they can take this as a life lesson and not perform the same mistake in a future position.

I used to work as a manager in retail and had to fire a few people myself. My approach was to calmly discuss where they went wrong and if it wasn't too horrible, I'd give them a second chance to do the job they were hired to do. If after giving them another shot, after having pointed out where they went wrong, they still repeat the same actions that got them reprimanded to begin with, well then I can 'em and with good reason! Sometimes it is hard to make people understand where you are coming from as a boss, as they feel belittled, embarassed and sometimes insulted. But those are the breaks!

If you're old enough to work, you should be old enough to take responsibility for your actions! Simple.

You'll get both. Obvisously, the ones with more disclipine will wonder what happened (or didn't happen) to result in the firing. Then there will be some that will say "screw it, I'm outta here". & you may find some hat are a combonation of both.
