If blood is 'pouring' out of a vagina, there is a problem and someone should go see a gynecologist.

A typical menstrual cycle liberates 2-3 CC of blood as the body aborts that egg.

Google it.

its called a menstrual cycle. It occurs approx. every month at the end of the ovulation cycle. Thy cycle produces an egg that sends the egg down the fallopian tubes where it attaches to the lining of the uterus. Two chemicals released by the brain FSH and LH cause the lining of the uterus to thicken and the egg will start to grow, if fertilization with sperm occurs. If this does occur, the egg releases progesterone, which signals the brain not to shed the lining of the uterus, hence pregnancy. If the progesterone signal is not received, the lining is shed along with the unfertilized egg and the cycle continues. There are more specifics involved, but I think this gets the pt. across

when a woman does not become pregnant, the lining in her uterus that was building up to form an embryonic sac (which protects the growing fetus) goes unused. This cell lining falls so that next month, a new lining will form for the possibility of pregnancy in the next month. The uterus contracts, causing cramps, which causes the lining to shed and flow out.
