Yeah, but that process begins at the top, so it's only a natural reaction to think of the end-result when looking that far down.

It's the sensation of vertigo (dizziness) as your brain tries to process the information your eyes are sending it. It can give you the feeling you are already about to fall or jump without willing yourself to do so. Also my friend is afraid of heights because when she was younger, she climbed up on the roof to read a book where her little brother couldn't bother her. He found her and was teasing her that he was going to push her off. When she leaned away from him, she started sliding and fell off into the bushes and broke her leg. Now heights makes her break out in a cold sweat.

I have the same fear! I can put vinyl siding on a house 3 stories in the air and push the ladder off the house to one side to nail in the lock and then sway the other way to get the other side, but for the life of me I can not get on a roller coaster! In your mind when you know your safe to drop or fall like base jumping or bungee jumping you won't get hurt but if you fall out of the copter or the coaster your mind knows you won't live so it causes a reaction like the one you get!

As a matter of fact, many people are dead before they hit the ground; the force of the fall pushes the air out of your lungs and you "smother" so to speak. Heart failure also happens to those with cardiac conditions, due to pressure on the chest cavity.

Ah, brings to mind the campfire song:

"He jumped 70,000 feet without a parachute...
... they scraped him off the mountain like a lump of strawberry jam...
... and he ain't gonna jump no more..."
