I think American Beauty is one of the greatest films ever made. It covers so many aspects of life, my favorite being the importance of family (appreciating what you have while you have it) and redemption. It's very similar to "Ice Storm" which I also liked. What did you like about the movie?

American Beauty is so wonderfully beautiful. The Movie itself is a form of art work, the life a surban family; so put together as if it was a plastic example of how life is. Underneath it all is a broken family; a mother with a goal to succeed but ends up crying and having to put herself back together as if to make everyone believe she is good enough, but yet carrying on an affair. The only way she knows how to feel. A father, sick of living his life as if he is being barely there, while smoking pot and lusting after a teenage girl. A daughter sad but with a bittersweet love story. I love the realness of it, the fact that everyone is not perfect, but that having your imperfections is what makes you beautiful.

I thought "American Beauty" was okay at best. I've seen copies of early versions of the script, and what ultimately made it to the screen was merely a watered-down version of the original story idea.

Annette Bening's performance was overwrought.

I'm inclined to cut the film slack because it was directed by a guy (Sam Mendes) who made his name in the legitimate theatre. I would take either of Mendes' subsequent films -- "Road to Perdition" and "Jarhead" -- over "American Beauty."

I liked the whole Beauty as Truth thing. It makes perfect sense to me sometimes and answers everything. Other times, such as right now, I don't get it at all.

I'm close enough to know the Meaning of Life is in their somewhere. At least now I know where to look.
