Okay, if 10% of the population is gay then why do people keep on nagging us? If so many people are gay then do they really think they can keep marraige limited to a man and a woman? I just don't get how people can be so rude to 10% of the population? Not all people are rude and homophobe- I know.

(if I have the wrong %, oops. I first heard this on Law&Order, SVU)

Sorry if this sounds like I'm just blowing off steam. Sorry for any spelling errors.

Sorry, mfrench3691. I went to click 'thumbs up' but ally clicked 'thumbs down', that was just a mistake. So you really get a 'thumbs up'!

There is no statistically reliable survey at the moment. Kinsey's report used a self-selecting sample, and showed around 10% of the population was gay.

Face-to-face interviews of a random population give much lower percentages - but these suffer from the problem that many men in particular are still reluctant to reveal their sexual preference in such a situation.

The last US census showed around 5% of households reporting as 'same sex'. However, this may under-report, and doesn't take into account platonic friendships. It also doesn't give us any information about gay men and lesbians living alone or in family situations.

So the best estimate available is 2-10%. Even at 2%, this would represent around 6 million people in the US. At 10%, that jumps to 30 million. Either way, it's not insignificant.

As to the main point in your question - why do people keep attacking us? Because it serves their political agenda, or because they are just hateful.

To answer your question directly: Straights (who live that life outwardly, anyway) still control most of our culture. And they live a straight, probably married life, and they want everybody else to do the same. Then, as far as reading between the lines with your question: I suspect that 10% probably is a pretty good guess of gay and lesbian people. However, that doesn't mean that 90% are straights though. I personally believe that there is at least a sizable no. of bisexuals. And I believe nearly all men are bisexual to some extent.

I think people are used to looking at sexuality as if it is a black and white issue: you're either gay or you're straight. But I think sexuality is a lot more complicated and complex than this. There are varying degrees of sexuality and to put a % on it is unrealistic and inaccurate. Society is somewhat obsessed with putting a statistic on everything, but I think that human sexuality is perhaps too complex for any number. As far as anti-gay behavior and anti-gay marriage : I think this stems from mis-education, mis-information, abuse of religion, and individuals who blindy follow what general society tells them is right and wrong without ever questioning anything on their own. Good question Alika!

No you have the percentage about right. This includes those in the closet.

As for the rest of the population being rude and thinking they can ignore us. well look at what they did to the american indian, black americans, and other minorities. It took these people time to get laws changed. It will take us time, but we will win.

The 10% number is sometimes disputed. I've heard anything from 3 to 12. But your point is well taken, no matter what the percentage.

Homophobia is extreme here at Yahoo...because the mentality and stupidity of these people prevent them from getting jobs...they have nothing to do but sit in front of a computer. Trust me, I do not see this kind of junk on the street. It is met with hostility by the majority of the straights I know. Most people do not care one wit about orientation. Only the minority is so loud. They spend every waking hour yelling, inventing excuses, etc. ... none of which hold water. They contridict themselves at every turn. Good luck

The actual "data" isn't known. Ten Percent is simply an estimate.
If you read about what is going on, it isn't really about "Marriage" at all. It's about power. it's about who has the power and who wants to keep the power.
People are told that you are free to believe what you wish but when you attempt to act on those beliefs then they claim it infringes on their rights. They are really quite vague about those "rights" that we are infringing upon though. It seems like cowardice to me, the fact that they don't want to come right out and say "We wish to discriminate against you and not appear like bad people." You can do what you want to do but you have to obey OUR religious beliefs. It simply isn't enough that we obey them(we don't but that's the man behind the curtain you aren't supposed to see) you have to obey them also. The worst thing? They tell themselves that the right they have to decide for all based strictly on religion. How far do you think Hebrews would get trying to ban Pork products in the United States? Pork is unclean, an abomination to those of Jewish faith, should they not have the right to ban them? Are we infringing upon the rights of Jews by not allowing them to ban the sale of pork products?
Exact same situation. Power. Who has it. Who thinks it's their "God Given" right to force it on others.

I believe it's more than 10%, because nobody asked me if I was gay (nor any of my friends)! So there's whole groups of people missing!(smile) That statistic is really old I believe.
