Because it requires amazing skill. Which means no extra weight.

The only sport that comes close is basketball and even that...it's much easier to get points and you don't need as much coordination and reasoning skills. I am American (at least by law lol) but I have to face that fact that the majority of Americans like sports that don't require AS much talent as football. Not saying that they are easy because sports are incredibly hard (most of them). But look at baseball, you SIT during baseball, just sit there! You don't necessarily have to be in tip-top shape, basketball- playing space is much smaller and again, don't have to be in tip-top shape. American football-have to be incredibly durable and fast but how many fat football players do you see?

I'm not dissing any other American sports but the truth is football (soccer) requires agility, coordination, and you always have to be thinking about other people and reason about what you should be doing. You can not just trundle about a field or space only worrying about the people that are covering you like in basketball or baseball you have to think about ALL players on the field and the ball. It combines all skills needed in other sports together and you can never gain weight or be heavy. Not to mention, you can go a whole game without seeing anybody score, we tend to look on the surface of things and not look deeper into the fact that yes, there's no score, yes, that is fustrating but there is also amazing play going on in the pitch!

so yeah...
1. crazy skill including incredible reasoning.
2. not as action-packed.
3. you cannot be fat.

I am an American and I love soccer. MUFC! DEUTSCHLAND! I think most people don't like it because were not that good at it. Ranked 33rd in the world isn't that bad though. Plus people would rather watch basketball because it is more 'manly' since touching someone is a foul. Plus most would rather see a lot of scoring which takes away the fun of it I think. I like to see low scoring games because the goals are more exciting when its 1-0 instead of 100-92. Also another problem is that soccer is rarely on Tv. The only good games are a couple epl matches a year and world cup and euro games. I wish more Americans were interested in soccer

Agent 86 asked: "Why are all the premeirship teams being bought up by american billionares then??"

For financial reasons, purely financial reasons... let's not pretend for one second that these Tycoons really have a interest in the beautiful game.

And regarding the original question of why do the majority of Americans dislike football or soccer, one of the main reasons is that football doesn't have timeouts and quarters like the American sports do, so there are no opportunities for commercial breaks. And we all know that American TV viewers are conditioned to concentrate in 8 minute bursts...

Actually they don't. They play it rather a lot, but it is mostly played by girls or youngish children - hence the phrase "soccer mom".

American do play soccer. What they don't do is watch soccer.

Why is this so? Various theories include

1) what I have said above, that it is indelibly thought of as a kids' game - rather as Brits routinely dismiss baseball for being close to "rounders", also seen as a children's game.

2) that the frequent diving and lying around injured is seen as wussy: a theory advanced by a sports writer in The Evening Standard recently. US sports - Hockey, NFL, even Baseball have manly conventions - for instance, if hit by a 90mph pitch in baseball, convention dictates that the batter can "walk off" the pain but cannot so much as grasp the point of impact. Given this, the frequent falling over and bogus dives in soccer must seem a bit feeble, particularly compared to ice hockey.

3) The score line is too low. Draws are anathema to US sports fans. And there are simply to few goals. Here they may have a point too: whereas the soccer score lines maqke for a good league game, they lead to a terrifying randomness in knock-out competitions.

4) They don't do very well at it.

5) It isn't televised, so they can't watch it even if they want to.

6) They have enough sports of their own.

They don't dislike it. They just don't have the same connection they have with baseball, basketball, football (World Series, World Championship, Superbowl). They did not have the claim that they invent the game, hence the claim that they are/were the best in the world.

I don't buy the whole small scoring and boring thing. The World Cup is still more than World Series, Championship, Superbowl, and Stanley cup combined. Oh, and the USA men's team...they suck.

Ignorance of the game by those who could stand to gain financially, combined with an incredible reluctance to accept the fact that what they, call football is really more akin to rugby.
For about 99.8% of the game, they are holding the ball!! Is that, football!!

Most American sports journalists have never played the game and as such, belittle the game and its players at every turn. Their audience unwittingly buy into and perpetuate the mindset. Needless to say, the recent "performance" by players in the World Cup supplied them with much fodder for their rant. But that's another story/question.

I for one don't like the sport because I find it boring, unless Brandy Chastain is ripping her top off. I just don't see the point. Just as many don't see what American Football is all about. If American Football is viewed as senseless by people other than Americans, why is NFL Europe so popular? Seems like the perfect game for "hooligans".

On another note...Thai Lady I invite you to come and play the "gay" American Football game. You will get your skinny butt hospitalized and kicked all the way to Bangkok by Fat Americans. ANYBODY can play the other game and walk off the field, the same is not true of American Football. For your information there is "Native" language in America however it is spoken only by Native Americans occasionaly. As far as the english language goes, it is American english. Which by the way is being spoken more and more around the world as it becomes the worldwide language....so basically Thai Lady kiss this American's .....

A lot of narrow-minded racist Brits.
Why are all the premeirship teams being bought up by american billionares then??
Why does nearly every high school and college have soccer teams?
And oh btw I do watch a lot of premeirship only cos i'm over here but to be honest, i don't think it's great. i do, however, like champions league.
i think your premiership would be better with a playoff system. ot's kind of boring to see chelsea 20 pts ahead of everyone else by Jan 1 and the bookies already declare them the winner.

and thai lady boy can kiss my ***

as ronrlogan so nicely demonstrated my point, here goes:
most americans dont' like soccer as much as football or other sports because there is, officially, not much heavy contact allowed. you are supposed to kick the ball, and avoid the other players. most americans have a passion for violence and destruction, and so prefer to watch football, hockey, and, yes, even baseball. it's the spirit of the romans living on. why do you think the violent and bloody colliseum was so popular?

maybe they think that their favourite sport is their own sports like baseball, basketball, American football & NASCAR racing, so football or soccer is mostly dislike by the American. they are passionate about their own sports!!

in every World Cup, only some minor American knew that there is football World Cup staged every 4 years & they also did not know that there is a UNITED STATES football team for the World Cup!!
