The Human Genome Project.

Now that scientists have mapped the human genome, they are starting to look at individual genes. They are finding out which genes control which things in the human body. However, since a lot of the code is inactive, this is going to take time. Once they have figured out what every single gene does, they can go in and figure out ways to activate or de-activate certain genes. For instance, heart disease is known to have a strong genetic link, and is a major killer in the US. Many people who eat right, exercise, and watch their lipid levels still have heart attacks because of strong genetic predisposition. What if that problem could be addressed on the genetic level? The same thing goes for many diseases and degenerative conditions.

The only thing I fear is that as the secrets of each gene is unlocked, people will start tinkering with genetic engineering. It is one thing to de-activate a gene which predisposes someone to diabetes or cancer, and quite another thing to make a pre-ordered baby with brown hair, blue eyes, high intelligence and low percentage of body fat. The former would be great for humanity, and the latter is just plain scary.

bio-genetic research (including stem cells). The potential in this area are astounding. We're only beginning to unlock the secrets of disease, aging, genetic predisposition, and for growing new tissue like spinal cords, hearts, livers, maybe even entire limbs, instead of relying on donors.
