Linear equations are easier to solve than non-linear equations. And any equation of either type can be very useful to calculate something you don't know, that can be measured. For example: what stock is the best value? How much money will I have next year? How much gas milage will my car get? These are all things you can calculate if you have an equation. With a useful equation, you enter the numbers you have now, and you get the number you want. The more complicated equations get you better answers, but they are harder to solve. The easiest equations to solve, the linear equations, may not be the most accurate.
