I just came back from Barbados a couple of days ago and I took both. I would suggest just taking BDS ($3 to our GBP), simply beacause it's easier and when you're out you don't have to keep converting it in your head!! It's not hard I know, but it makes the difference after a couple of drinks!!!

Get a few BD$ before you leave the UK, and then utilize your ATM card to get money and make purchases
You'll get a much better rate of exchange

BD$ are far easier if you get US dollars you can pay with them but you get change in BD$ its difficult to work out where you are up to. I have been several times and find BD$ much easier

Use U.S in hopes that they will accept it. Because if you have any money left you don't have to worry about switching currency when you get back................Have you ever thought about traveler's checks. Everybody accepts them and its no hassle when they are lost because much information is needed to cash them.

US and exchange it as you go there. If you pay with american money you will get their money back in change. It's not worth trying to exchange their money back to US dollars when you are done.
