Aloe is a succulent, and prefers full sun. You can grow them in a shady area in the summertime, but they won't grow as fast or strong, and may be prone to disease.

Also, for a northern climate you will have to bring it inside during the winter. You may be better off just keeping your potted plant inside year round in a sunny window location!

My family has an aloe vera plant we've grown for years. I don't see why not.

The aloe will do very well inside. They even survive winters.
