I own a 99 1/2 Jetta. I need to have the brakes replaced, and unfortunately with my schedule have left them go long enough that the rotors are rubbing. Can I request that the mechanic just replace the brake pads and not the rotors? Does that just mean that I'll wear through the brake pads faster. Know any fair estimates for small repair shop in Pa? Thanks.

I would advise you change both. For safety reason.

Where are you in PA? I'm not too sure about the Philly area, but can definitely recommend some mechanics just over the bridge in SJ. I think I've hit them all until I found the one that I trust the most. It may be a bit of a drive for you, but it'd be worth it. He charged me <$200 for pads and rotors, but I brought the parts in, and he installed everything for me and checked the rear brakes for me as well.

As for the brakes, if your pads are tearing into your rotors, then you will either need to get them cut or get new ones. It should only cost about $10/rotor to get them cut (shaving down the surface to make it flat again). It's possible though that the rotors have been cut before or eaten too much to be cut again...rotors must be a certain thickness for brakes to work properly, therefore, you may need new rotors, and I think they usually run about $50-80 a piece? Don't quote me there...you should look it up yourself if you really want to know.

Most likely, the mechanic will recommend at least cutting your rotors if there's enough meat left on them, but be prepared for the possibility of having to buy new ones. That's the price you pay when you can't get to it yourself or in time, you know?

If you do get new rotors, ask the mechanic for the proper way to break them and the pads in. It will help prolong the life of the pads and the rotors by making sure that they wear evenly.

If your brake pads have not worn down to the rivets, you can get away with pads only. Most places will want to do everything--thus making more money. If you can hear a rubbing noise when you apply the brakes, you probably have gone too long to replace the brake pads only.

Finding a good, honest mechanic is not an easy thing to do. Once you find one, stick with him/her. Ask around and look in the industrial section for mechanics--the ones that are not paying for all the fancy advertising and high building costs.
