I need new gutters, but it's also about time to get the roof replaced. Which should I do first? If I do the gutters first then then its possible the gutters would get screwed up by the roofers as I've got about 4 old roofs up there that I'll want removed before they put a new roof on. On the other hand, if I do the roof first then when they put the new gutters on they will have to lift the first row of shingles to attach the roof therefore possibly messing up the roof.

Thoughts?

You need to replace the roof first. When the put the new gutters on they don't go underneath the shingles. They go underneath the drip edge on the facia board. Unless you don't have a facia board, then you will need to use wrap around hangers. They do need to go underneath the first row of shingles, but they will not be damaged. They're made to go on like that.

Do the roofing first and then the gutters. They are professionals and know how to install the guttering. It's not hard to lift the shingles just enough to shot a nail and it will not harm anything. If they rip the shingles off the house and don't throw them out from the edge far enough you can count on possible damage to the gutter work. Even if they don't mean to, accidents happen and why take the risk. Just do the roof work first.

most roofing companies can work with sheet metal workers in protecting your gutters i would try to wait till they tear the old roof off completely let them get the black paper down then while their putting on the gutters the roofers could load the roof with the shingles. soon as gutter on one side the roofer would have a place to work. hope this helps

Do the roof.

Add a clause to the contract that all gutters will be left intact and undamaged. Any repairs to gutters will be incurred by roofers, etc.

If the people you hire know their business, there shouldn't be any problem with the roof being messed up. Talk with your contractor and see what you can come up with.

Or, if you are doing it yourself, a good how-to book would be invaluable.

Good luck!
