Do you know how many times this question has been asked in YA?!

It goes back to the days of wagons and horses instead of cars.

Here's a great article about it: http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a3_021b.html

i think it goes back to chilvary, when 2 people would settle a duel (fight) on horseback, your oppenent would be on the righthand side, because most people are right handed (holding weapon in righthand)and from your opponents view you would be on his right. think about holding a knife in your right hand and trying to reach to the left to cut someone while riding a horse.
