For an athletic man, the maintenance protein level is about 0.8 g per pound each day (from all sources)... a 180 lb man needs 144 g of protein. For "building" that requirement goes up to about 1.5 g per pound.

In someone who is out of shape, you are better off doing the calculation based on lean weight using 1.0 g per pound... to do that you need to measure or estimate percent body fat.

Dont just take protein. You need to eat more too as you will require more calories. You will also have to work out to actually build the muscle. The extra protein just provides the required building blocks. It also depends what weight you are at now. Look up some pro bodybuilders (jay cutler, ronnie coleman, branch warren, gunter shierkamp, dexter jackson and johnnie jackson are good starts) and take heed of their diets. Bear in mind that the bigger and heavier you are the more protein, calories and nutrients you will require. Also read magazines like musclemag and mens health for tips. In general, a good protein meal will be about 25-30 grams of protein.
