First, have a car that gets good gas mileage to begin with, and keep it well-maintained. Also, do not keep a lot of junk in it that adds weight.
There is an intersection on a graph between two lines: on one line if you drive faster you use more gas, if you drive slower you use less, but it takes longer, so at some point you use more. The point where it intersects is at 45 miles per hour. That is the most economical speed to drive.

Revving the engine can cause a lot of use of petrol, the same as stopping and starting. Depending on the car you have got, may consider swopping to a car with a small engine size and cheaper fuel tank like diesel.

Obviously, don't floor the gas.Keep the car at a certain speed and if in a manual transmission car,keep the rpms low by making early shifts.
Keep the windows down because when up they add aerodynamic drag,making the car work more to reach a certain speed.
On long stoplights, shut the engine down.
Going downhill,use inertia instead of the gas.

Drive like you walk, no laying rubber or bleach outs. Never go over 55mph, slowly remove your foot from the gas pedal until you are just maintaining 55. Never break hard, let the engine slow you down long before you break. Dangerous but it works, explosive tyre pressure, check out the records books, coasting out of gear, illegal though. Why not buy a small diesel car, 65mpg.

Get your car inspected every year, change the oil often, rotate the tires often, just general tune ups on the car when they need it, or before they need it.
Also, this is going to sound funny, but: When driving with the windows rolled down, you actually use more fuel because of the drag resistance. But if you use the AC, your battery gets used more. So that's your call.

There is a style of driving that has emerged called ECO driving.
There is a website or two devoted to this subject. Put "ecodriving" into Google and see what comes up.
Basically, it is about smooth, un-rushed driving: looking ahead to spot hazards and reacting to them sooner. Only accelerating up to 2500revs. before changing gear. (3500 for a diesel). Gentle braking.
This style of driving has been practised by advanced drivers for years, but is now being portrayed as the style of the future for all drivers.

Top gear did a great section on this, if you have Sky look out for it on UKTV, if not then buy the DVD.
Driving very economically requires a lot of clutch skill.
The basics are, drive less than 50, accelerate and decelerate slowly.

find out (probably in the manual) the most economical speed and gear to drive at and attempt to go at that.
try to break as little as possible
have the windows (and sunroof) closed
fill up in the morning when the petrol is colder
This is from what I remember of Jeremy Clarkson's attempt to drive from Lands End to John OGroats on one tank.

Improve your driving..consider an advanced course. The further you plan ahead, the more fuel you could save. Take the course and all will become obvious. Try these if you are from the UK. IAM or ROSPA. Put them in your search engine. Maintanance stuff you could do to the car aswell..the advanced tutors will tell you about it.
