What's the best thing about being English../ British?
How about this to start with?.

Come on sing along just like its the lst night of the proms..

Rule Britannia
When Britain first, at heaven's command,
Arose from out the azure main;
This was the charter of the land,
And guardian Angels sung this strain:
Rule, Britannia, rule the waves;
Britons never will be slaves.

The nations, not so blest as thee,
Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall:
While thou shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and envy of them all.

Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful, from each foreign stroke:
As the loud blast that tears the skies,
Serves but to root thy native oak.

Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame:
All their attempts to bend thee down,
Will but arouse thy generous flame;
But work their woe, and thy renown.

To thee belongs the rural reign;
Thy cities shall with commerce shine:
All thine shall be the subject main,
And every shore it circles thine.

The Muses, still with freedom found,
Shall to thy happy coast repair:
Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned,
And manly hearts to guard the fair.

-- James Thomson

and now this little ditty.. come on sing along!

Land of Hope and Glory
Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet.

Dear Land of Hope, thy hope is crowned.
God make thee mightier yet!
On Sov'ran brows, beloved, renowned,
Once more thy crown is set.
Thine equal laws, by Freedom gained,
Have ruled thee well and long;
By Freedom gained, by Truth maintained,
Thine Empire shall be strong.

Thy fame is ancient as the days,
As Ocean large and wide:
A pride that dares, and heeds not praise,
A stern and silent pride:
Not that false joy that dreams content
With what our sires have won;
The blood a hero sire hath spent
Still nerves a hero son.

Haa this England a green and pleasant land with rolling hills and babbling brooks, farms and villages towns and cities.. the home of the brave and free civilisation and sense of fair play!, its the taking part that's important not the winning don't you know!..

Hey there are so many reasons why, just take a look through history and note the accomplishments of the worlds first truly global empire!. yep that's right the worlds first truly GLOBAL EMPIRE!. where the sun never set!..

Just look at the size of the UK.. its an tiny!. island off the coast of mainland Europe! and yet for very nearly 2 hundred years it laid claim and ruled a quater of the entire world population I ask you is that great or what?.

Never before in the history of the world have so many owed so much! to so few!!. yeah I know good ole winston churchill used that very phrase when the RAF beat the german lufftwaff in the battle of britain at the start of the 2nd world war. I think though that its a great expression to use for so many other reasons..

The English/ British have given the world so many things that its would take far to long to list them all here, things that perhaps everyone in the world will have used at one time or another and take completely for granted.

But you know none of those material inventions and gizmos mean that much! compared with the one thing that truly stands tall above all the rest and that is the English language. It defines a people and sets the pace and the stage for so much in modern life around the world people clamour to read write and speak it! its ability to adapt with new words expressions and usage sets it aside from any of the other major languages spoken around the world..

Oh! one last thing we also gave the world America and one of the best documents ever written .. the American declaration of independence.

I'm glad I'm English, not French German Italian or even American!.. we led the world and you all followed in our wake!. three cheers for the Brits, whey hey!!!

Unlike being French You can take pride in the integrity of your country and not have to face a world that knows how corrupt your political leaders have become.
