Can you tell me whether the doctor prescribes prenatal vitamins, or whether they usually instruct you to buy the over the counter ones? I have been taking the One Source prenatal vitamins from Wal-Mart. Have any of you taken these? Thanks!!!

Yes, the doctor does prescribe prenatal vitamins for u. However u do also have the choice of buying your own - I bought my own and I think I actually may be taking One Source prenatal vitamins. I actually spoke to a pharmacist who discussed prenatal vitamins with me and recommended those above all all.

Myth: Prescription vitamins are better than non-prescription vitamins.

Reality: Nope. Not all vitamins are created equally and many vitamins that are available by prescription are also available over the counter. What is more important are the ingredients in the vitamins and how well they absorb into your body. Many times prescriptions are written so that the cost of the vitamins will be picked up by insurance companies.

When you're trying to decide which prenatal vitamin is right for you, talk to your doctor or midwife about their recommendations and keep some things in mind:

No prenatal vitamin will contain all of the calcium you need.
Too much vitamin A can cause birth defects, be sure that you're using a prenatal vitamin or a multi-vitamin with under 10,000 IU.
Too much iron in a prenatal vitamin will not be absorbed properly.
The taste and texture of vitamins do bother some women. If you can't keep your prenatal down, consider switching brands.
Hope this HELPS :)

Yes, the doctor will prescribe you prenatal vitamins but it is okay to take over-the-counter. I'm actually trying to get pregnant right now and I'm already taking over-the-counter prenatal vitamins.

The OTC ones are merely almost as good because the prescribed ones. The OTC ones have each and each of the supplementations that you and toddler desire. The prescribed ones frequently have slightly more effective supplementations in them. So both way your good. i'm getting the single an afternoon prenatal supplementations, $13 for a month provide. My doctor prescribed them. I didn't know that they are also OTC since the Iron levels could be bad for you if you are not pregnant or breastfeeding. If you choose to breastfeed stay one them for as long as you can.
I read a previous question of yours - do not take prenatals unless you know you are pg. Just take a regular multi-vitamin to make sure you are getting the folic acid to prevent those early birth defects.
Good luck and relax.

yep, those are the ones i've taken my whole pregnancy. my OB said that they were fine and if i wanted they would give me a prescription for vitamins when i ran out, so i could save some money.
i just kept taking the wal-mart ones b/c when i ran out they were easy to get!

also, i compared them to prenatals at GNC and i actually like the wal-mart ones better.

so, take one in the morning and one in the evening and you'll grow a great baby!
take care!

The doctor may give you sample packets from the drug companies and a prescription...BUT I got VERY sick taking them...something about the vitamin B...so I was told to take a One a Day ~ the body only absorbs what it can and wastes the rest... GOOD LUCK!!

The One Source is what my doctor recommends that I take & I have been taking them for one year. They are cheaper than having your doctor prescribe them for you.

doctor's don't usually give u a perscription but they can give u samples. However they did make me very sick especially in the beginning. I would take them at dinner time. My doctor told me they r better to take with some food. But no it doesn't matter where u get them. But they are very important to take.
