I bought one in April, 2006. I have about 7800 miles on it. Consumer Reports rated it second to Honda Civic(by just a hair) as far as reliability goes. I have the 5 door hatchback "s" model. It has more power and I got the 5 speed "triptronic" tranny. That is a 5 speed automatic; and youcan go to manual where you just tap the shifter to shift. Really neat. Consumer Reports tested 5 hatchbacks in August edition. Mazda 3, Audi 3, Saab ?, and 2 dodge chargers. Mazda was at the top of the list.
Really REALLY fun to drive (to quote Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman" it handles like it's on rails). I live on a roller coaster(hilly twisty road) and get 27+ mpg(I tend to be sorta heavy footed)

My boyfriend and a friend of mine both own Mazda 3's. One is 2005, the other is 2006. They both love their cars and have no problems with them at all. I wanted to get on, but there are VERY few Mazda 3 automatics left on any lot in Phila/South Jersey. I bought a Mazda 6 for about the same price since there are more out there. Great rebates on the 6 right now.

The styling is decent. I read in consumer reports that the mazda 6 uses a ford V6 engine (not a reliable one). Don't know if the 3 has it's own engine but I suspect it might be a ford engine (not that a ford 4 cyl is bad). It is on Edmund's top 10 list of recommended sedans. If you know someone with access to Consumer reports, have him/her look it up for you.
Why not go with a late model camry/accord. They both have proven reliability though the styling isn't as nice as nissan or mazda.

Mazda is owned by Ford which also owns Volvo.
The Mazda3 is the new Volvo S40. Just has different interior and exterior body panels. Can't go wrong owning a Volvo.
