Can you tell when things aren't good?
Are you able to realize that what you gave away (gave up) was worth more than what you received (have now) ? Worth more than what they gave you?
Are you seeing things clearly?
Are you going to be a hero....or a prisoner?

"Wish You Were Here" is the title track on Pink Floyd's 1975 album Wish You Were Here. The song's lyrics encompass writer Roger Waters's feelings of alienation from other people and himself, as well as disillusionment with music. Like most of the album, it also refers partly to former Pink Floyd member, the late Syd Barrett. The main riff came to David Gilmour while playing his acoustic guitar in Abbey Road Studios. He then collaborated with Waters, who had already written some lyrics, to finish the song.

My guess would have been that the song was referring to someone who was giving a false impression of what was really going on in their life. For example "A smile from a veil" I took to mean that does the viewer see that the smile is not a true smile, but a false front to make others think everything was okay.
Here what I found on widipedia: "The song's lyrics encompass writer Roger Waters's feelings of alienation from other people and himself, as well as disillusionment with music."

Momeant shared with a friend. Deep memories of moments. And yes some were probably of their shared drug induced states. Many of the words ment a great deal to them some others share too. Ever hear the phrase "you just had to have been there" Well Floyd is just that I grew up with his music.

The song was supposedly written to Sid Barret, the lead vocalist and founder of the group, who had serious mental problems and had had to drop out. The subject of mental illness and our perceptions of reality have been a big subject with Pink Floyd.
Sid recently died, by the way, and was also the subject of "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond."

To any too young the album "The Wall" was a good place to start if you've never listened to Pink Floyd.. Listen to the words of "Another Brick In the Wall" the angst of losing his father who was in the military is his pain for all to hear.

This song AND album was an unofficial tribute to their band mate who left the band prior to the album's release. He actually died a couple of weeks ago, though I can't remember his name. I imagine that these words are spelling out change either physically, mentally, spiritually and/or emotionally, and wondering why their band mate "changed" on them and left the band. Who knows, maybe you need to call up Roger and ask him.....

Roger Waters lament concerning the state of his friend from school and former founding band member Syd Barrett who basicly went to far into the dark side of exploring the hidden realities of life and discovered the true reality and evil of THE piper at the gates of dawn;ie,doom. barret basicly lost his mind and nothing his friend Waters could do, not the savior, could bring him out of the dark morass he fell into.
