I read once that there are many kegends on the origin of the name "The Big Apple" According to one of these legends, NYC was named that way after the orchard its governor Stuveysant owned downtown. But Newyorkers usually dont use this nickname.

well, its origins are unclear. it is said however that fitz gerald qualified NY as big apple and that's how it became known as that.
