OK. For a start don't listen to anybody who tells you not to think, when meditating. Try this for 5 or 10 minutes in the morning and five or 10 minutes at night. Sit in a stable position with your back straight, your chin slightly tucked in toward your chest, eyes either closed or semi open. You can sit cross legged on a cushion or just sit on a chair. Try to keep your back upright and your head up (this helps to keep you awake), you shouldnt fall asleep.

Start by breathing in and out deeply once, relax your face and your hands - which should be resting lightly in your lap. Now begin to count the breaths 1 for each in and out cycle until you reach 10 then start again. The point is to focus only on your breathing. You will find that thoughts pop in to your head all the time, watch them and note them, let them go and come back to the breath. Try to be a welcome host to everything you hear or sense, don't fight anything. If you lose concentration then start from one again. The point is to detach from your thoughts, don't try to stop them, just let them be. For example you might find yourself judging yourself 'Damn I started thinking about burgers, damn - I'm thinking again...' and so on, the trick is to notice the first thought - in this case thinking about food and then just come straight back to counting breaths. Don't worry if you find this difficult at first, don't judge yourself - just see any judgement as another one of those thoughts - not real, let it float away with the rest of them.

The ideal is to be able to just follow the breaths without any counting but this takes a lot of practice. Eventually if you practice regularly you may reach the point where you realise that you yourself are just another one of those thoughts drifting around in the vast nothingness that we all really are. Now that is when you have reached your true nature. Think of your mind/thoughts as a pond that has been stirred up, and is murky and muddy. As you sit and breathe and focus, the mud slowly begins to settle, until it is still and clear and you can see the precious jewel that sits at the bottom.

To begin with sit for 5 minutes in the morning and 5 at night. A regular short practice is much better than brief spells of long sitting. Try to build the attitude of just watching but not attaching to your thoughts into your every day life. For example if you are walking down the street feel your feet on the floor or listen to the birds singing, if any thoughts come up let them go and come back to your footsteps or the birds - same principle! This is the way to peace and serenity, step by step day by day. Its like riding a bike if you fall off just get right back on again! The best way to good mental health. I wish you well on your inner voyage.

PS the answer befor ethis is not about meditation, but a relaxation technique using visualisation Still a good thing to practice but NOT really meditation.

Meditation is a long process of learning really. The quickest way to achieve anything by it is to find a comfortable position with the least amount of distractions either physically or of sounds. Personally I like to sit in the easy posture, others prefer the lotus posture. Though don't try anything while laying down unless you masterfully make it through the necessary stages of meditation.

The objective of meditation is to think NOTHING for it is the quickest way to get in touch with the Self/Universe/God. You can practice this by concentrating on just one thing per session and gradually you may go in there with the blessedness of a totally empty mind.

In the beginning don't sit too long, 3/4 of an hour max, later on you can do longer sessions. Sensations that will occur during your meditation journeys will be the opening of your third eye, the opening of the fountain on the crown of your head. Along the way you may also feel your other chakras open up. Don't expect any of this on your first sessions, but when you feel them take it as a sign that you're doing meditation as it is supposed to be done. You may also notice that after a session it may seem as more time has passed than you actually sat in meditation. This may be due to the higher quality of such moments, but that is just my interpretation.

It won't hurt either to follow yoga classes. Jnana yoga does purely meditation and a minimum of physical postures (asanas), Raya yoga does a good mixture of both and Hatha yoga is mainly physical postures.

The main things to think about while meditating are... 1. are you in a comfortable position?
2. are you in a quiet area?
3. are you sure you will not be disturbed?
4. be patient with yourself no one is an expert the first few times!!!

Meditation is simply about getting in touch with yourself. begin with slow deep breaths and thinking of things that make you happy and peaceful like ocean breezes, or the sound of a running brooke, or the beautiful mountains.
Then as you concentrate on these happy things allow yourself to really see them in your mind. Picture all the sights and sounds that would be there. Try to really be there. Then allow yourself to explore what you might do there...like if you are at the ocean, would you swim? or walk the shore? or look for shells?
Let your mind wander.
When you are ready to come back to reality, simply say to yourself that it is time to go... but that you will return again and have another adventure.

I know that most people think that meditating is sitting down cross legged, fingers in that weird position, and going Ooohhhhmmmmm, Ooohhhhmmmmm, over and over, but meditation is just being in a quiet, dark room, with some candles and incense burning, and breathing in through your nose out though your mouth. try to clear your self of all negative energy, and then try to clear your mind of everything but one subject. it could be something that you did that day that was good, ,you could imagine yourself in a nice relaxing place, or, instead of punishing your self for your sins, try to see what you could have done better, and thank the lord for being on the earth. that is what meditation really is.

It may be cliche but the Psalms are a good place to start. David and other writers refer to meditating on God's Word a lot in the book.

I would suggest just reading through the Psalms to get a good start or idea on how to meditate and what to do.

As far as I am aware, meditation is about sorting yourself out, getting your ways to make more sense. So the idea is to become in touch with yourself and discover what thoughts, ideas, attitudes and approaches you have that do not really work for you or make sense. Ordinarily you may be caught up in life in a way that you are not aware of these problems, so by going into a relaxed meditative state, you make it so that you can become aware of these things and resolve them.

Just cross your legs like they do when mediating, start taking deep breaths by your stumic. Take in breath for 3 seconds, hold breath in stumic for 3 seconds, exhale for 3 seconds. Close your eyes and relax, imagine all your worries, stress, over filled head lighten. Do this where no one or thing can disturb you.
