I believe players are paid to throw off thier game etc. The people that would do this would be people with lots of money riding on the sporting event.

NO I don,t think so , just think for a minute the KEY players that can make a difference are VERY high paid so you would have to pay them a outragous amount of money which you probaly would ,nt be able to wager enough money to make it worth while now college thatsb a dog of a different color this i KNOW

I don't think they're fixed, but I do believed they are influenced by the media and the commissioner, which trickles down to the refs.
The media force feeds what it thinks is in the best interest of the game to the fans, and the refs enforce it, period.
