Rain is rain to most people.. the weather people have lots of little terms though,
"Light rain" is a categorization of a normal rain storm. Depends on the size of the drop of rain. But this is generally the more wide spread storm, that you can (usually) see coming for a long time before it hits.
"Showers" are more sudden, coming from a different type of cloud than 'rain'. They tend to start and stop suddenly.
The importance when camping, you can plan for rain, you can't always plan for showers! But, showers don't last as long. Personally however, if I had to camp in the rain, I'd take the 'light rain' the whole time I was there to intermittent showers. Sometimes traipsing around the wilderness when it's damp is fun. Better than being too hot anyway.
Here are the technical descriptions:
RAIN
Precipitation in the form of liquid water droplets greater than 0.5 mm. If widely scattered, the drop size may be smaller. It is reported as "R" in an observation and on the METAR. The intensity of rain is based on rate of fall. "Very light" (R--) means that the scattered drops do not completely wet a surface. "Light" (R-) means it is greater than a trace and up to 0.10 inch an hour. "Moderate" (R) means the rate of fall is between 0.11 to 0.30 inch per hour. "Heavy" (R+) means over 0.30 inch per hour.
SHOWER
Precipitation from a convective cloud that is characterized by its sudden beginning and ending, changes in intensity, and rapid changes in the appearance of the sky. It occurs in the form of rain (SHRA), snow (SHSN), or ice (SHPE). It is reported as "SH" in an observation and on the METAR.

Light rain falls from stratiform (stratus) clouds and can last awhile & maintain a steady rate of precipitation.
Showers involve convective (cumulus) clouds and the intensity of precipitation will vary quite a bit over a short period of time. Usually the whole event will be less than 15-20 minutes.
Neither have really bothered me while camping, we've just dressed for it or we dove for our tents!

light rain will fall at a near-constant rate whereas, showers changes in intensity or it may stop and start up again... steady rains usually fall from a cloud called nimbocumulus or thick altostratus
