I agree they are a distraction, however, a very minor one. I think they serve a greater purpose.. they remind us first of all about the loss of a life - be it mechanical failure or thru driver neglect, but more importantly they serve to help me, and I'd like to think other drivers, be more diligent. I drive quite a bit and I fully accept this "distraction".

I believe they symbolize alot of different things, for instance, if you ever have known anyone that the marker represents ,your thoughts would more than likely change.I use to not pay much attention to markers beside the roads here in my home town, but in the last 3 yrs.iv'e known a few people those distractions represent. The last being a friend I just talked to the day before he was hit by a semi, ignoring the upcoming red light'slams into his vehicle and kills him upon impact. He was 82 yrs.old.His marker is on the corner of highway 101 and 31.I believe it represents a senseless act that could have been helped, not saying all semi drivers are thoughtless, but with markers around all can see the problems that occur when we all get behind the wheel.

The hand made crosses and the like are put there by the friends and family members, to help them grieve for their loved one. Here in Florida, the county will put a marker on the road where someone has died at the request of the family. It has their name and the date they died. The marker is a metal circle on a 3 foot (I think) post and is put on the side of the road where that person died. You can't really read them from the car while driving, but it's a reminder that someone died on that spot due to somebody's wreckless driving.

I think they are sad. It reminds me of how fragile life is. They may be an annoyance to some, a reminder to others, a warning to a few. Do you ever wonder, how old was that person or did they have a family, or was it a child? Maybe they are distractions, however, it does remind me to appreciate those I love.

I lost my partner to a road accident and i think these markers show respect, act as reminders and are a place for relatives to reflect on that persons last moments and feel a connection.

I think they're good in a way. I mean they always make me think about the way I'm driving and heighten my senses to be more careful so I don't end up with the same fate as those who are being remembered.

I think its ok to put them up, but after awhile , take them down, cause they are distracting to drivers, and you also want those who died to rest in peace,as not to stir the emotional memories every time. The grave site can be memorial, shouldn't have to be the death site. But agian every body has different opionins.

Where we live there are plenty, because they drive like crazy, l think they are a reminder for the relatives to visit, but they don't stop crazy drivers.

I TOTALLY respect the family's wishes to do that. It reminds me to be careful, too.

NOT a distraction to a believer, I would think.

They're all over up here in the north too.

It's littering the public highways with garbage--pure & simple.
