Payton. Smaller back with more speed who would not go down unless he was hit by a freight train (and I'm not sure the freight train wouldn't lose that battle). Given the option of going out of bounds or trying to run over a defensive back trying to make the tackle, Walter would inflict as much punishment as possible.

Walter Payton, I'm a cowboys fan and I know those teams that Walter Played on in the late '70's were crap and he still racked up the yards. Hands down Walter Payton. Emmit had a way better line and a way more balanced offense for most of his career. Walter did as much or more with a lot less help.
Even the sporting news top 100 players ranks Walter in the top ten and Emmit comes in way later, like 65th or something.
No disrespect to Emmit but Walter, WALTER, 100 times I say WALTER!!

Walter Payton. Emmitt never had to carry a team like Walter did. I mean, the 84 Bears, who else was there on offence? The Fridge? That was about it. Even Jim McMahon sucked after that year. Emmitt had good teams with Troy and Michael Irvin. Overall, Emmitt played longer and got all those rushing records. But if you have to look at one player who did the most for his team it was definitely WALTER PAYTON

Walter Payton, Walter Payton, Walter Payton. Not even close. Emmitt Smith is probably not even in the top 10 of alltime. he ran behind the most dominating offensive line ever in the history of the NFL. ask larry johnson or priest holmes what a great offensive line will get you, or any broncos rb of the last ten years. anybody with any amount of talent could have put up riduculous numbers behind that o-line.
