I have been on the depo for about 7 years and have been fine apart from the normal side effects of weight gain etc. But I have been told to come off it due to an operation I need in a few months. I get on well with it as I don't need to remember to take a pill everyday. As I am coming off it, I thought I may stay off it and see if I can loose some weight. In the meantime I'm looking for another contraceptive that I don't really need to think about as I don't trust myself to take a pill everyday. I've heard about patches - but do they use the same drug as the depo? (ie gives you the same side effects) And how does it work, how often do you change it? Any help most appreciated!

The Coil.
Condoms- male or female ones.
The Cap.
Sorry but I don't really know much about the patches or their effectiveness.

The shot alters your hormones. It is a combination drug. There are several things that you can use. Almost all forms of birth control use different drugs. One that you can try is the ring. You insert it into your vagina, leave it there for three weeks and take it out for one week. Then, you put a new one in for the next week. It is easy and you don't have to think about it much. Another option is a IUD (intra uterine device) they have one called the merina but it uses the same hormones as the shot. They also have a plain copper one. You go to the doctor, they insert it into place. You will cramp a little during the procedure. Once it is in place it is good for up to 10 years. When you decide to get pregnant you go in, have it removed, and you can get pregnant almost immediately.
