The best thing you can do is read about all the options you are considering and talk to women who have actually experienced birthing that way.

Then make up your own mind as to which you prefer.

I did natural with no lamaze (I knew the breathing technique, but didn't take classes) and I didn't find it all that painful, but different people have different pain thresholds.

Cosaxteacher is right. Honey, childbirth hurts. There is no getting around that. People up here can advocate no drugs until they are blue in the face, but getting something for the pain is the way to go.

Hey, guess what? Before they had anesthesia, people had amputations and surgeries with no pain releif. Modern medicine has come a long way to help people. If your'e skittish about the epidural, don't get it then. But don't suffer either. At least get some stadol or something in an IV for the pain. More women died and suffered horrible complications back in the goold old natural days than they do today. Wonder why that is...advancements in medicine and pain management.

If you are that much of a pain junkie, don't worry. Even with the best ansethesia, you are STILL going to feel it. It just takes the edge off. I tried to do that whirlpool birth thing and It didn't releive any pain for me. I was just in pain sitting in a whirlpool!! I got my tail out and got an epidural. My baby came out about an hour later, and I was comfortable enough to enjoy my birth, not wrenching in the worst pain of my life, and that's what it is. It's the worst pain you will ever experience.

But, you have to do what you feel is right. Please talk to your OB/GYN about these options, and don't make a hasty decision either way based on propaganda.

Be blessed, and have a happy and safe birth.

edited to add: Oh, and momma2binghu: I had two epidural babies. Guess what? I was alert and mobile. I just was not in pain. Guess what? Both my babies were "calm and content" and my son was the only one who squalled and that was because the hated being suctioned by the nurses. My daughter just was wide awake and fascinated by the lights and people. You seem to condescend and belittle anyone who needs or wants medical intervention. Are you a MD? Not everyone desires to hurt when they experience birth, and not everyone is the "Earth mother/martyr granola" type. Live and let live. Goodness gracious. Everyone is different, there is no right or wrong in this instance.

Talk with your doctor. If you have your heart set on an alternative setting for your birth (ie, not a hospital bed) make sure that the doctor that you have chosen is comfortable with this and, hopefully, has some experience with what you choose. Also, too many mothers end up mad at themselves for "failing" when their birthing plans do not go as planned. I wanted a "drug free" birth, and ended up crying out for the drugs. I also has a c-section as my son was 10 pounds. I am not a failure as a mother because I had drugs. Make sure, however, that you do sign all consent forms for drugs and procedures around 35 weeks. Then, if you want the drugs, you can get them faster.
Also 2 notes - My son came out fully alert and active. - All childbirth is painful. First children are normally the most painful.

I've had two AMAZING waterbirths. The water is very relaxing and really does help you manage the pain. When you enter the water, everything feels different. There is a reason that many people call it an "aqua-dural" because it really works so well! I had no tearing at all with either of my water births. For my second waterbirth, my hubby was in the tub with me and caught the baby. My water babies were also very calm and alert after birth. They really didn't even cry. I highly recommend it!

Every 1 is different, it's what is best for u, if u have a partner it can be really difficult for them to see u in such pain. I would suggest not setting ur heart on a water birth, in case ur baby needs monitoring or should poo inside u as they won't let b in water then u'll get stressed as not going 2b ur perfect birth, (this does sound pessimistic sorry) Good Luck whatever u decide x

I have never had a water birth but I went for a bath while having strong contractions and it does help ease them. I had an epidural with my first two and entinox and morphine with my third, to be honest if I had anymore I would ask for an epidural. Though everyone has different pain thresholds, decide what you want in labour but you can always change your mind if you feel you cannot cope with the pain.

The kind of birth depends on the type of person really. its different for all of us. ive had a child but through my own fault never experienced childbirth, just 1 aspect of it- c section at 30weeks. i think u shud do what is right 4u and what u want 2do, not which will hurt less bcuz at the end of the day u'll have a beautiful baby and u'll forget the pain and feel nothing but a rush of love when u see it for the first time. good luck and i hope u have a good birth. xx

You can plan and plan all you want - and it won't make a bit of difference! Ultimately you'll do what feels right at the time. I had planned a water birth, all natural, and had banned hubby from looking at "that end" so that he could help me breath/concentrate/not pass out etc. It all went to pot as soon as the contractions came! Suddenly I was screaming at the midwives to get me an epidural "NOW!", hubby spent the whole birth at the other end as he was transfixed once our baby was crowning, and there I was epidural in, feet in stirrups, panting as much gas and air as I could get into my system!!! It was all fine, and despite my plans being scuppered it was amazing - as yours will be...................good luck!
