If it hurts enough to bother you in daily activities, get a second opinion. You don't want to have to live with something for months or years that due to a mis-diagnosis. See a physician that specializes in sports medicine or an osteopath.
If you can live with it without too much bother, see if it gets better in the next couple of weeks. If there is no improvement, see a doctor again. Something may have been missed.

a sprain is when you have injuried the ligaments (bone to bone connection) of a joint. an x-ray may or may not be able to see the extense of the damage. the stiffness is caused by the sprain. blood flow to the ligaments are very limited that is why it hurts so much and that is why you are experiencing the stiffness. the best way to nurse it and make it better is to put a hot compress on it to increase blood flow to the area. also do some shoulder exercises to get it back on point.
go to see a sports medicine specialists. they deal with those kinds of injuries all the time and will be able to help you with your shoulder problem

Without knowing your age it would be difficult to relate any pre-existing arthritis.
However, most ligament/tendon injuries somewhat lengthy in their duration. Yes, torn/sprain ligaments can throw your musculature out of whack and cause spasm to some associated muschle groups.
Application of ice (care to to give yourself frostbite) applied for approximately 20-30 minutes, wait 30 minutes then apply local heat to the area.
Most patients will benefit from visiting a physical therapist who can isolate the torn/sprained ligament/tendon and provide the appropriate therapy for it.
This will take on general 4-6 weeks to heal, however, you will be subject to repeated injury to the same area.
Hope this helps

I hurt my upper arm overdoing it at work, and it felt like my sholder socket was fried. I couldn't even lift a cup of coffee! went to the doctor, he gave me prednisone and a muscle relaxer. took the meds, the second evening taking the meds I was in the emergency room at 1am with my heart rate soaring like it was going to explode. $916.00 it is going to cost me for the dr. to tell me to stop taking the prednisone(steriod), and at the moment my arm is starting to do the same thing. I have to work, can't afford to go to dr. and nervous it's gonna flair up as bad as it was. typing is not strenuous, what I do at work is, but I have no choice than to take ibuprofens even though after a while that doesn't help and I end up with a stomach ache! I feel for ya' Believe me!!!

If you are hearing popping and stuff, you might want to go to a sports medicine doctor. Also, you can try Glucosomine, that helps out joint and cartiledge repair and it is over the counter. But go have it checked if it does not get better.Waiting too long can be worse.
