Formatting a disk means to basically write zero's to all sectors, deleting all information. If the computer is reading the disk as unformatted and you have it set-up right, then it means it has lost the partition settings. Reformat the disk and follow instruction to gain use of the disk again. Good Luck :O)

do not format your disk - that will erase any data you have saved there. Are you sure your disk you are trying to use has data on it? To format means to prepare the disk for saving data. Rather like buying a furniture kit and assembling the drawers. It creates an organizational structure for saving data. If your new computer does not recognize the "language" it has been saved in, it may tell you it needs to be formatted - which is like taking your kit totally apart, tossing out the contents, and re-reassembling it in perhaps a different order. Are you trying to go from a Mac to a PC?

Formatting a disk erases it's contents and makes it readable to the applicable computer. The situation you explained sounds like possibly you are taking a disk written with a MAC and trying to read it on an IBM compatible PC (identified by Microsoft Windows running on it) or vice versa. Another possibility is that maybe there was an error and your data was never actually saved to the disk. I'd first try to see if you can read it on the original computer first. Then

You should go ahead and format it if u are ready to forfeit the information there in.

Formating a disk means "cleaning it up" or "wiped off" It leaves the disk empty as if it had never been put to use before.

Once u agree to format the disk, be sure the source of information u want to transfer is still intacte.g "Sys A."

Insert back the disk and copy or download then take it to destination e.g."SysB"

It means that the disk you are using is full and doesnt have enough space to store the data you are trying to feed in or it may have gone corrupt/damaged, use another disk. By the way the word formatting in computers mean to delete/erase everything in the disk and start afresh.
