I saw this on those 2 cleaning ladies that come into your home and tell you how dirty is your house. They said to pour a 2 liter bottle of pop (pepsi, coke, root beer) in the toilet let sit for a 2hours or so, then go in and use your brush and scrub it(supposed to come off very easy) and it's supposed to leave it sparkiling.

Turn off the water to your toilet. Flush out most of the water. Get a pumice stone from Home Depot or someplace like that.
Rub over the staining. That is supposed to be the classic way to deal with that problem.
There might be some products you can put in the tank that elminate rust. Check with your local stores or ask a plumber.
Ideally, a water conditioner would be best and well worth the investment, if you own your own home.

I see your other answers suggest using an abrasive material. Actually depending on how much rust must be removed initially you can use Lye (drain cleaner) with a cup or two of regular household bleach mixed together and let it sit for a day or two if possible. Make sure your water level is just above the rust line.
Also, depending on your water content (such as high Zinc or Potassium) what looks like rust may only be Calcium deposits which oxidize in standing water and turn brownish like rust.
Once every two months I dump a bunch of bleach into the toilet holding tank and let it sit for 24 hours. It helps reduce the problem.
Hope that's helpful to you.

Muriatic acid used for swimming pools will do a great job on that rust. You can buy it a Home Depot. Pour in 1/2 cup into the bowl and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then, a quick swoosh and flush. Do this on a regular bases.

I use "KABOOM" Works great.. or there is a great toilet bowl cleaner called "The Works"....it can be a bit hard to find though.
We have a hard water problem. The only problem w/using a abrasive scrub (as stated above) is that it can scratch the porcelain and then the stain get in the scratches and makes it really difficult to remove. Good luck to you:)

Use a pumice stone to scrub the stains off. They make a special one for toilets, so don't use the kind for your feet. It should be on the toilet bowl cleaner aisle.
