Have you checked out the consumer reports on Laptops? They provide some pretty good advice on purchasing a new laptop. One they do reccommend is the new Dell Inspirion E1505 for $1,120. This laptop is supposed to be powerful enough to replace your old desktop. But anyways, there is good/bad about every company you choose. It all depends on you. I am shopping for a laptop as well and have been drawn to Dell b/c they are mentioned as having a superior keyboard (except to Macs b/c their's are lighted) and because you can walk in to a Dell store and customize your pc and get exactly what you want out of it. Also, they seem pretty affordable for the . Many other people will tell you other brands are superior but they are not very specific in their reasoning.

If you want to manage photos, edit movies or create podcasts, I would recommend a MacBook. The built-in iLife software provides excellent tools for self-expression by creating your own media. For academic or business projects, you can use the free NeoOffice office suite to open, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint files that you are carrying over from your old system. I have the white MacBook and 2GB of RAM and it is very fast for all the applications I currently use. After owning 6 windows-based laptops previously (5 dells and an IBM), this is my favorite computer that I have ever had.

It mostly depends on what you want the laptop for. If you want a brake from Dell then get a Sony Viao, a Toshiba Satellite, or a Gateway/eMachines laptop. Dell is still recommended though.

Dell is usually reliable, but my sister just bought a laptop from them last month and has had nothing but problems. I also had a Dell from work last year and it was really reliable. Other than that I would say Gateway...the seem to give the least problems other than Dell.

Dell is usually a love hate type thing some people will always buy dells and some will refuse to buy dells. In my opinion dell usually really junky parts in their lower end offerings.
Brands I would recommend are HP, Acer, Toshiba, or a mac if your interested.

Dell is a very good brand. You get the best technology at the best prices. It's that simple. They are also very durable and perform very well in durability tests compared to their competitors. And if something goes wrong you can send it in and they will take care of it. Provided of course that you are under warranty.

Dell, Compaq or Toshiba are all good if you spend a bit of cash. You get what you pay for.
