Not very long if treated. Try swishing and gargling salt water and using Bonjella to soothe the pain. BTW, the salt water will hurt like hell, but it will kill the bacteria and should help your ulcer heal.

You probably did not ge the ulcer from "whacking your mouth with a toothbrush". Most ulcers in the mouth are viral in nature and are limited to duration and time. I have never heard of them being contageous unless it is herpes, but those dont usually occur inside of the mouth.

Good treatment that will shorten the duration and relieve the pain -go to your local pharmacist and ask for liquid benadryl and purchase some mylanta. Mix a solution half and half (50/50) rinse (swish around in your mouth) and SPIT the solution out.

Benadryl acts as an antihistamine while the mylanta has a "coating effect". Good reports have been recieved when trying this out>

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

A couple of days, unless you keep knocking it, in which case it will hang around for a bit longer.

You can get Bonjela which is meant to help or just rinse your mouth out with salt water.

I've done that, or scratched the inside of my mouth (gums) with a ballpoint pen...not bright, I know. You can get drops or a cream like Bonjella to apply to keep the area protected until it heals and stop the pain. They're available without prescription in any pharmacy (chemist).

It could last for weeks untreated. Rinse youre mouth with salt water during the day and before bed. The solution shouldnt be weak enough that you dont taste it and not strong enough to burn the hell out of it, personal preferance is best. That will get rid of most of the pain and heal it faster.
