If someone admits guilt and it is not considered in the public interest to spend time and money going to court to be slapped on the wrists, the police may offer a caution. This is a verbal admonishment that stays on your record and would be referred to if you did something illegal again.

The aim is to deal with offences quickly without the need to go to court or cause an individual to have a criminal record.

Normally for first time offences at the lower end of the seriousness scale.

Ironically the caution is recorded and can be brought to the attention of a future court but it doesn't count as a conviction.

When the police give a caution they are saying 'think again'; 'take care'. It is usually given to people who haven't had any trouble with the police before. It is the same as when your mum says,"You have been warned!" If you do it again you are in BIG trouble.

if u are cautioned not to do something its like a warning to not do something because a consequence will come up. For an example a yellow light is a caution for telling you whats coming up- a red light which means u need to stop. If you don't, you have a consequent of an accident, a ticket, ect.

so that if you burn yourself (coffee) with something that has a caution on it that you will feel so dumb for not paying enough attention to the caution. at least for the most of us. there is always that 1% that no matter how stupid it makes them look they still want the $$$$

To slow you down so you think carefully before proceeding, thus making it less likely you will have an accident or make a mistake. Which was the whole objective of the sign or warning being posted. Then, mission accomplished!

its so that people cant get in trouble for not warning someone. If you had a snake in your yard and didnt caution someone and they got bit for going inyour yard you could be in trouble. Its like a safety net so people can say "I told you so" to save their own ***

It keeps a record of the offence on file and in the event of a reoccurrence the punishment would be more severe.

As Collins states:
heedfulness, care; warning - vt. warn -

You must be able to reach a dictionary surely?
