Converting an internal harddrive to an external harddrive is simple once you pick out a good enclosure. To pick out the enclosure you will need to know whether your harddrive is SATA or IDE, SATA has a about 1" wide connector with no real pins visible, IDE has an about 3" wide cable which is usually flat, and there are 80 or so pins on the back of the harddrive.

You will also need to know the size of the harddrive itself if its from a desktop it will be 3.5"

Here are 3.5" IDE ones

If the harddrive is from a laptop

Here are 2.5" IDE ones.

Once you have the enclosure alls you have to do is open the enclosure up and screw the harddrive in, the connectors inside are the exact same as inside your tower.

A casing with a power supply and an interface that will convert the IDE interface of the hard drive to connect to a USB or Parallel port

You can't really convert an internal HD to an external but you can purchase a USB external HD that you can connect to your laptop via an available USB port.

You'll want to do some searching for an "External Hard Drive Enclosure". They make them for 3.5" (DesktopHard drives) and 2.5" (Laptop Hard Drive). Be sure to get one with a fan, and check user reviews, as there are some rather crappy ones out there.
