Why is there always some sad smartass who thinks it's funny to answer this question (in the Politics category) literally?

No the last 9 years have been a disaster. Crime is worse than ever. Tax is higher than ever. Education is a joke, the health service is finished. Sleaze and corruption in government is the worst ever. People who say its time for Dave to take over will get no better deal. We need to get out of Europe get our self respect as a nation back.

Broadly no....but where to start?? Well how about

Blair has a childlike belief in the power of free enterprise, and ignores the problems of normal people. The belief that the private sector is the solution to every problem is going to damage this country badly.

The "war on terror" is constantly used to mask other problems - the risk to any individual of being killed in a terrorist attack is far lower than being killed in a road accident.

Our foreign policy is just "do what Bush says"

The media drives politics in this country, bringing too much focus onto things like illegal immigration and not enough on what really matters. If any of you think Britains worst problem is asylum seekers you are sadly deluded and are being manipulated by the agenda of the Daily Mail, Express etc

Most young people are obsessed with celebrities, and most celebrities themselves have no actual talent and are just famous for getting their t*ts out or dating another celebrity.

There is no alternative to Blair while we have a voting system that will only elect Labour or the tories, who are really Labour with a few minor differences.

Many people have boring, low paid unfulfilling jobs working in call centres or supermarkets, and are allowed by a very loosely regulated credit industry to build up huge debt

Any other ideas??

No, we need some right wing things and some far left things. Trouble is both parties try to appeal to the lowest common denominator - ie the great mass of fücking ignorant thick people who make up 90% of the country. What we could do with is sterilising most of the uneducated lower classes who feel it is their duty to repopulate a small country all on thier own at the expense of the tax player. Enroll all dole bludgers under 21 into the army, same with all young offenders and repeated asbo cases, and employ strict discipline to straighten them out. Make any one who signs on for more than 6 months without showing real attempts to get a job work for the council for there dole check. Tax high earners more and plough it into public services. Re nationalise the public transport system, water board, electricity and gas services and invest heavily in renewable clean energy (not nuclear). Reorganise all public services from the top down and make them coherent working organisations, not the money pits they are. Get rid of the monarchy and the house of lords.

Thankyou very much and good night.

Airforceterp 330, has got it completely the wrong way round. How can you possibly believe that the Tories agree with the direction that New Labour has taken Britain in. It has all the hallmarks of a radical totalitarian government, which believes in big government, nannying, promotion of minority groups, feminism, multiculturalism and wants to hand the country to the EU.

No! Britain is not going in the right direction, and hasn't been for some time. The country is being destroyed as we speak.

Why do I always get the impression that Britain is always Number 2 in the world?

Be Number 1 - that way you know the country is heading in the 'right direction'. It has been reacting, responding rather than leading or being proactive.

It used to be Number 1 - the country I look up to. Not anymore. I find Australia a much better country than the UK.

Well, Britain is actually moving Westward at the rate of approximately 10cm per year.
Unfortunately, this is due to a tilting effect, which is making the West coast of Scotland rise from the sea and the South East of England sink accordingly.

Whether this is the 'right' direction - I really don't know.

If you listen to Sarah Kennedy on Radio 2 between 6.45 and 7.00 every weekday morning, reading snips from her papers, you might think so. Starting off with 'Let's start with the Telegraph', she may read a few words of any story, and then bore us all with her 'verdict'...obviously she wants to grab the so-called socio-economic ABC1's, and thus says what she thinks they'll warm to - id est; terrorism/crime/governmental ball-ups. It's a shame people who have a platform to millions of us (be we from Chelsea or Colwyn Bay) tries to mold us into scared and cynical morons.

LOL

Well no I don;t think we are in the right drection. The government have turned their back on the ordinary British man in the street in favour of vote chasing.

They pander to every terrorist, crook and criminal who has enough money to wave at them or who fits the "ethnic minority" category (they wouldn't want to be accused of racism now, eh?) but when it comes to the ordinary Brit who's family have been here for generations (probably some sacrificed their lives for the country in two world wars), working, paying his taxes, behaving himself, they are not interested.

He falls on hard times or gets sick of all the crime in his area and they are completely disinterested. They only pay any attention to him when he doesn't pay his council tax or gets caught by a speeding camera.

It makes me wonder what we pay our taxes for.

As a nation, are we going in any direction?

I feel, politically at least, we go round circles, constantly bumping into things
