I'm suffering with it today too. IBS is an umbrella term - people here seem to be assuming you've got trapped gas but do you? IBS can cause diarohhea or constipation. Long term you should try to get on a hospital trial to look at your diet and see whether things you eat make it worse - f'r instance, I know then when I have a couple of pints it makes me worse so I have to think about that before going out! Peppermint tea will definitely bring some relief. What med's are you on? If you're on anti-spasmodics from the dr then you could try to take some paracetamol to help with the pain or some ibuprofen for the inflammation in your bowels but be very careful about how often you take painkillers and anti-inflammatorys - they cause constipation which will make your IBS worse in the long run, a one-off dose however won't cause such problems. If you're not sure what your meds are then pop into a chemists and ask the pharmacist for some advice, they might be able to recommend something to take along side your meds that will help and they're probably better placed and qualified to do that than we are online. Someone mentioned aloe vera juice, I used to take that everyday and I have to be honest it was a great help and I probably should get back into it myself! Good luck and I hope the cramps improve.

My IBS completely goes away when I'm in good, healthy shape- at a healthy weight, eating real food, and exercising a little everyday. I can even eat the foods that would ordinarily make my IBS act up. When I first found out I had IBS (about 6 or 7 years ago) my doctor gave me an under the tongue (sublingual) tablet that eased the intestinal cramping. Still though, I like to resolve the problem instead of just treat the symptom.

Your probably sick of ideas about diet, but I'll still state mine.

The healthiest diet is vegetarian, with lots of fruit, green leaved vegetables, nuts and seeds.

If you really want to solve then problem, then stop eating meat and fish right now. They are full of pesticides, herbicides and god knows what else besides, and are usually the source of bowel problems.

In addition, you need to clean out the bowels which ar not healthy. Eating fruit will help in this - eat as much as you can. It will start to take effect after a couple of days. If you get thirsty, drink either water or freshly made fruit juice. Don't drink anything else. Lots of water.

Eating fresh vegetables, as in a salad is an excellent way of helping the immune system to solve the problem.

Also, getting some exercise is essential. Either a littlle jogging, or some fast walking, or swimming (?)

I have Crohn's disease complicated by IBS. Years of being on meds really didn't help much, so I did some research and started taking herbs along with my regular medicine. I don't know if there has been any improvement yet as I have just started taking them. I take acidophilus, aloe vera juice (it tastes and looks just like water), DGL, and peppermint. Why not look around on the 'net and see what you can find out about these herbs, then talk to your doctor and see if he agrees with you trying them? Good luck!

Eat very small meals more frequently through out the day instead of big meals. The less your tummy and bowels have to break down at the same time, the less active all your gases and digestive acids will be. It will ease the discomfort.

there's not much you can do for the pain. I've had it for 10 years you have to get rid of the stress in your life. change your diet totally, get lots of fiber and water dehydration causes pain. stay away from artifical chemicals and flavorings in food they cause pain. Caffiene is a known laxitive don't drink anything with it if you have diarehea. Soda pop causes bloating and painful gas so does certian spices. I have cut out most of these foods and I hardly get IBS anymore. I'm in the process of doing body cleanses ,parisite, bowel, liver, cleanses to get my body funtioning properly, check out www.Curezone.com also blood type diet most foods that causes problems are foods that you genectically cannot digest properly or your body does not use properly! It's not easy but the benifits are worth it!! Good Luck!!

Drink plenty of water, eat fiber and take walks(it helps work out the gas) and try a heating pad on the gut. If that doesn't work try aspirin or another over the counter pain reliever.

Somebody has already mentioned it, but try rubbing your tummy. The only thing I want to add to this is use aromatherapy oils because they are very effective. For example, peppermint oil and petitgrain oil are excellent for IBS. So rub these lovely oils into your tummy but always rub clockwise, never anti-clockwise!
