No one will be able to top Nicholson's Joker. The same with Keaton's Batman, Pfiffer's Cat-Woman or De Vito's Penguin.
However, it is going to be interesting watching Seymour's take on the Penguin. Also, give Ledger a chance. He is not my best choice, but he fits perfectly with Nolan's structured new Gotham.

At least he makes an attempt. At least it's not Mr. Freeze all over again..that was the worst character I've ever seen. I think Heath Ledger will be ok, but I was really pulling for Paul Bettany. I think he would have been an awesome Joker.
Ok this part has been stolen from another person in a different question:
Robin Williams was trying for the part, but the idea is that since the new Joker (in series today) is a lot more quick and agile, and can fight very well against Batman. That might have played a part in Heath Ledger's casting.

A young lady on Q and A told us a few weeks ago that Heath was going to play The Joker in the next film and I was prepared to call her a super hero. If you are saying he will be a poor choice then, sir, you are a villain. Heath has a good range of characters both tragic and comic and will be able to see in the part of a twisted and shrewd witty villain.
I must thank you for passing on the Seymour Hoffman info though because he is a cracking supporting actor and will make a vile Penguin. I look forward to hearing Hoffman's first quack, quack, quack playing the cinema.

Agreed on Ledger. Then again, I didn't think Jack Nicholson could pull off Joker so tremendously. So I'll have to wait and see (plus he better do something after Brokeback...he lost all man points in my book -- And for those to young to know Cesar Romero did a great Joker). Robin Williams would have been great (I am so glad he did not do Riddler that movie was trash), however b/c they are focusing on a younger Batman, he might have been too old...screw that he would have been great regardless.
Philip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin? I didn't think he was all that great in MI-3. Plus Penguin as historically been fairly small (yet dangerous). Never really being able to take on Batman physically, but dangerous b/c of all his weapons. Besides he has a tough cast to follow. Burgess Meredith and Danny DeVito were not only good b/c of their acting ability, but due to their height, they were PERFECT for Penguin.

Heath Ledger as The Joker is an insult. I hope I'm pleasantly surprised by his performance, but I seriously doubt it.
Philip Seymore Hoffman as The Penguin is genuis. I can't wait for that.

I thought Robin Williams would get the part for four reasons;
(1) He was desperate to do it.
(2) He'd been passed over for the part of The Riddler by Jim Carrey.
(3) He'd worked with Christopher Nolan, director of Batman Begins, on the film Insomnia.
(4) He would've been perfect for the part, he's got that manic energy that you need to be a really good Batman villain.
Heath Ledger? No way. He mumbled his way through Brokeback Mountain, I would be surprised if he was any good in this. Let's see what he does with it anyway.

Heath Ledger, awful pick. We all know that, but he does have that crazy wide smile. So maybe that will play into it some how. But there is no possible way he holds a candle to Jack, the only Joker.

NO WAY......... I think Heath Ledger would make a terrible joker. Jack Nickleson was a great joker, they should find someone more along those lines if they are going to go down that road again.
