Yes, 2001 a space Odyssey was a great movie. But when it was made back in the 60's it was an experimental time in movies. Now to get the money to make a remake like it would need to be made. So much stuff would have to be cut and watered down to appeal to a mass audience it would be a complete joke. To make it half way decent you would need a big time director and actor to do it. But the problem would be the actors ego. Could you image how bad it would be if let say Tom Cruise tried to star in the remake.

Space Odyssey's themes have been reflected. Event Horizon used an evil ship on a distant space mission. As much as I love Odyssey (and I think Hal 9000 is the most brilliant Sci-Fi villain ever created) a remake would take away what was incredible about the film, how it appeared in 1968. Especially because before odyssey all audiences had seen was giant mutated ants and Plan 9!!!! A modern day audience would be unable to appreciate Hal and maybe even unable to comprehend the Monolith of evolution. It is a minority who don't just want a soppy love story or an action packed thriller.
We should just continue appreciating the wonderful ethical and technological issues presented in Odyssey. A remake would ruin its beauty (and three hours of the Blue Danube would kill any audience today, and its what helped make Odyssey so revolutionary).
Also, Hollywood would take the opportunity to fill it with awful dialogue and CGI. This is just my opinion but 2001 is already legendary, it doesn't need a remake.

I saw it in the theater when it came out - I had no idea what was going on - I was a kid.

The new fx would be great.
