Aristotle, who else, Plato? Well, I for one can't take his idea of the platonic forms seriously. For him the platonic chair, that is the idea of a chair, is more real than the chair I am sitting on. For Aristotle, on the other hand, our concept of chair is derived from real physical chairs. Also, he described a system of logic that was not really improved upon until late 19 century. The breadth of his work is astonishing; science, which he more or less discovered, metaphysics, Ethics; and virtue ethics is still important today, literary appreciation, etc, etc, etc. Bear in mind that most of his work is lost and only comes to us second hand through Arab scholars. Truly an outstanding genius to rank along side modern Philosophers such as Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, etc.
