You are given a dark shiny solid and asked to determine whether it is iodine or a metallic element. Suggest a non-destructive test that would enable you to arrive at the correct answer.

You should be able to tell simply by looking at it. If it is dark and shiny, it more likely to be a metallic element. Iodine has a dark purple look.

Two non-destructive tests come to mind:

1. Smell it. Iodine has a definite odor. Metals: not so much.
2. More scientific: do a conductivity test. See if you can complete a circuit with a bunch of crystals of the unknown substance. Metals will complete your circuit, and Iodine won't.

Iodine sublimes at a relatively low heat, so gently heat it and see if it turns into a gas (it will be a heavy, purple vapor that should not escape the flask, so let it cool and it should crystalize back into iodine). Another, less destructive test is a density testy. If the density of the substance matches that of iodine, then it's most likely iodine.

Try to see if it conducts electricity, measure the resistivity of it. I don't recall solid / pure iodine conduct electricity.

If the compound is actually CCl4 (with lowercase 'L' ), the IUPAC name for this organic compound is "tetrachloromethane". But also keep in mind that this compound is "commonly" called as "carbon tetrachloride". So before you enter your answer make sure if the question is asking for the standard "IUPAC name" (IUPAC nomenclature is the standard naming convention in chemistry) or just the "common" name.

iodine has specific odour, metals - no.
iodine dissolves in chloroform, or slighty in water - the solution has a dark color (in water - yellow) (metals are insoluble)

Heat it and see if it sublimes (Iodine).
