Well, this depends on how much money you can afford.
If your in the 5 grand range, you can get a very nice 98-2000 model. In the long run, japanese cars have cheaper maintenance costs than American models. And especially with high gas costs, you might wanna look at a 4 cylinder engine. That will certainly save you a few bucks at the pump.
If you have less than 5 grand, I suggest you get about 3 grand and you can get yourself a nice 95 to about 99 model. If your not too concerned about gas prices, than an American car wouldn;t be a bad choice.
Try to stay away from all those european cars because they can be a hassle when you need to make repairs.
Japanese cars like the Hyundai, Toyota and NIssan will get the job done very well.
American cars, well, I've always liked Ford. They're tough and depensable.
I hope you get yourself a nice car, and always remember that when you're gonna buy a used car, always take a buddy with you and take it to a mechanic you trust to check it out before you make your final decision. Lots 'o luck.

Everyone has their own preferences in vehicles. I think most cars these days are pretty good if they have been taken care or. You are always taking a risk when purchasing a used car. I have a Honda now, on the advice of many people who said they were such great cars. I've had about every brand of car made! ( just about).
What ever car you thinks you might buy have it checked out at a good shop before you buy it! It is worth the money!
The average car has over 19,000 parts, and they all wear out!

There all good Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and even the newer Hyundai's .if you buy from a private party 1 owner , you will save on average about $1500 to $2000 from a dealer, if you do buy private party request all receipts on repairs and maintenance records, if the car has over 65,000 miles i would want proof that they changed the timing belt, if they did not change it i would deduct $ 375.00 from the price.and get it done. my 97 Honda civic was cherry and had 253,000 miles on it! when i sold it. a dealer will really try to hammer you, and your buying a used trade in, so your luck is the same. if i buy used i always buy private party. also request the seller to provide you with CAR FAX, it is a service that tells you if the car has ever been a wreak or stolen! good luck.edit also check prices with Kelly blue book they show a retail price for dealers , a private party price, and a wholesale price , try to buy, if you have cash! try to buy at wholesale then go from there , people like cash!

This month is actually the 2 year mark for the newest car I ever bought...a 1999 Nissan Altima. I got one with pretty low miles (<30k) that was very clean and came with the warranty for around $10k...that was 2 years ago though. It ranked as one of Consumer Reports most reliable cars and so far hasn't let me down. Repairs can be easy, oil changes are easy, and it's pretty comfortable.

Agree with everyone who said Honda, Toyota, Hyundai. All great cars. If you're tall, the Hondas out do everyone for legroom. I bought a used Hyundai and discovered that they include road side svce with their warranty if there's any left on the car. And it transfers to new owner for no charge.
