Depending on the age and brand of the car it is either belt or gear driven. Basically, there is a power wire running into your door to your window switches. The switch and motor are wired so when you flip the switch one direction the motor spins, thus causing the gear on the motor to spin either against a gear arm that pushes the window up or a long fairly hard plastic geared belt that pushes and pulls on the window in the track. When you push the switch the other way the switch reverses polarity on the motor and causes it to go the other direction. They are very easy to work on. It's harder these days to get the door panel off than to work on the windows.

The switch activates a motor in the door that drives a gear that the window is connected to. The gear and assembly are called a regulator. There are arms connected to the gear that slide along the bottom of the window thus pushing it up or pulling it down. If you should have to replace the regulator you may need to drill out rivets and replace them with bolts when putting it all together again. I have done a few and they can be difficult. Thomas S.

Works the same way as a manual window. Its just that an electric motor is where the crank handle would normally go.

there is a motor attached to a belt that when activated either forwards or backwards, causes the belt to move the window up or down.
