I was astonished to find Bush and Cheney have used over 200 million dollars of free money . In the form of grants . This makes welfare seem cheap in comparrison . Republicans allways talk about welfare with one hand in the cookie jar it would seem .

They give millions of dollars of grants to Corps to!!! Case in point: Citgo made a $439 million profit but took $19.4 million in government grants. ConocoPhillips earned $4.7 billion in profits but received nearly $10.8 million. ChevronTexaco netted a whopping $7.2 billion profit but several of its facilities still got over $7.3 million in government handouts. THESE OIL CORPS ARE MAKING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND BUSH STILL IS GIVING THEM MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF GRANT MONEY, OUR MONEY!!!PEOPLE SHOULD LEARN THE FACTS ON JUST HOW CORRUPT BUSH IS !!!!! LIKE THESE OIL CORPS NEED THE GRANTS AND TAX BREAKS BUSH GIVES THEM !!!!

Grants are for a specific purpose and are usually a one time thing.

For example, a grant may be for the study of alternative sources of energy, or to a college for an independent study of the effect of foreign trade. Some grants may be specious.

Welfare is a continuing string of payments without a specific goal in mind.

BTW the cost of government transfer payments (Welfare is only one type of transfer payment) runs to over 1 TRILLION dollars a year. That's 300 Million per DAY.

$394.5 billion (+12.4%) - Medicare
$367.0 billion (+2.0%) - Unemployment and welfare
$276.4 billion (+2.9%) - Medicaid and other health related
$1,047.9 Billion = Total of above three items. There are others not included.

That's more than twice the Defense Department: $466 Billion

BTW redux: Please note that I provided sources for my 'facts'. Where are yours?

Grant is the permission to give money or gold or somethingelse.
Welfare means money used directly or indirectly to help the people to be away from their sadness.

a grant comes with specific instructions as to how the money is used. welfare (of which I begrudge no one) does not.
