I want to put drywall over old ugly plaster in a bedroom-wall and ceiling. The current cost if I hired professionals is around $2.50/sq ft. How much cheaper would it be to do it myself and for those of you who have played with drywall is it worth the trouble.

Drywall is a very hard thing for some people, trying to finish it so that it looks nice can take some time and be kind of frustrating. I would see if you can find a finisher who will let you hang it, that would save some money. Good luck

Hanging drywall is EASY, especially if you have help, as it can get heavy. It's the finishing part that's tricky, and if it's not finished correctly, it WILL be noticed. You can hang the drywall and then hire a pro to finish it (called 'mud and tape') for you.

Depending on the size of the room, use either 8 or 12' pieces, whichever renders the least number of seams.

If you want ugly drywall in place of ugly plaster go ahead. lol Consider when doing this, use 1/4 drywall, you have electric outlets, that must be extended out, you have door trim, the new board must but up to and windows, -think ahead. hard to get a decent job, the first time you fool with drywall-

Over time, I found that if you double the cost of components, that is what the contractors charge, maybe just a little more.

So, 50% savings if you do it yourself - the question is do you have the time and skill to do it. A pro will do it in half the time you do too.

I believe you can do anything you set your mind to. Be sure to ask alot of questions and be exact. Measure twice cut once. I am a woman with a husband who is not handy. I taught myself alot. By asking questions and watching the home improvement shows.
