I do think the words have become politically loaded terms, to the extent that they can now be used as labels by certain groups with which to batten down their opponents in political arguments, even as terms of abuse. It can be used to condemn anything from severely antisocial and unacceptable behaviour and language, to even acknowledging in public that certain differences between certain groups of people exist. I try to treat everyone the same on their own merits regardless of the colour of their skin etc., but I don't always succeed, and I don't think that's always my fault. Different cultures and sets of exepctations exist, in many different forms all over society. Some of them are more problematic than others. This is a reality, it exists. We all need to grow up and realise it.

I would say that genetically and instinctively, humans are xenophobes. That is because they have reason as well. Humans try and impose their will and so they make enemies. Its the world over and visible in everyday life. Historically, virtualy every person, family, tribe, town, city, country and race has been , if not actually racist, then at least xenophobic. Its a natural reaction to the unknown peoples that are impossing their will.
You can put the word "bloody" in front of all the countries in the world you know.

EG
Bloody Romans!
Bloody British Empire!
Bloody Arabs
Bloody French..... and so on.

The further we go as a race , intelectually speaking, the further away we go from Xenophobia, because fewer people are "unknown" and unfamiliar to us.
Hence xenophobia is a fear response.
Racism is a hate response,

Fight or flight. ???

A racist would fight and a xenophobe will run away scared.

Hope that helped. Its only my two cents worth....

I know I have been on lots of occassions in my lifetime, probably most when I was still at school.

It really depends on the situation/event, what mood you are in, what religion you follow, what up-bringing you've had, whoever has influenced you, the friends you hang around with etc... but in general, I think everyone has been Racist / Xenophobic sometime in their life! (even if they do not want to admit it)

No, but I am sure someone else will be willing to label me as a racist or xenophobe by virtue of the fact I have opinions.

Tough one. My answer is a definate yes, and I am certainly very anti-semetic. However, I feel it is important to seperate predjudice from discriminination. I am most definately predjudiced, but I try wherever possible not to discriminate. I beleive that we are all prejudiced and any reader reading this who thinks 'I'm not, that guy's an a**e", I would question them as to why they pre judge me on a small paragraph of text.

Does anyone who actually *is* racist, consider themselves to be so? That's like asking a man when he stopped beating his wife!
Personally I'm not...people are people no matter what "package" they come in.
