Lest anyone think Hook's name too convenient, Barrie notes that "Hook was not his true name. To reveal who he really was would even at this date set the country in a blaze." Barrie also suggests through several clues that the Captain was an Old Etonian — in Barrie’s short story “Jas Hook at Eton,” Hook’s final words before jumping overboard are “Floreat Etona”

It is hypothesized that Captain Hook was modeled after the famous English captain Christopher Newport. Both were dark-haired captains of dubious pasts, and both were missing their right hands which were replaced by metal hooks. Newport commanded the ships that landed the settlers at Jamestown in Virginia. He also seems to have a distinctive similarity to Bartholomew Roberts, especially regarding his choice of clothes and his impeccable manners, although Barrie specifically associates his dress and hairstyle with that of King Charles II of England.

Another hypothesis claims that Captain James Hook could represent Captain James Cook, the British captain who discovered both Australia and New Zealand. The Lost Boys symbolize the Māori, who inhabit New Zealand, or the Aborigines, who inhabit Australia.

Most people know Captain Hook from the story Peter Pan and the prequel Peter and the Star Catchers. Hook is the Captain of the ship the Jolly Roger. In the prequel Captain Hook is referred to as Captain Black Stache. He is after the treasure that Peter and his friend Molly are trying to keep from the "Others". He doesn't know what it is but know that it most be very powerful.

During one of his attempts to claim the treasure Peter cuts off one of his arms. After this he continues to loathe Peter.

In the sequel, Hooks antipathy towards Peter continues. We find out that Hook's missing hand is now replaced with a hook, hence the name Captain Hook. He makes numerous efforts to kill Peter. Hook throws a bomb into Peter's hideout and thinks that he is dead. Hook then takes the captured Lost Boys, Wendy, Michael, and John and makes them walk the plank. Peter survived the bomb and thwarts Hooks plan once again.

There was also a movie made about Captain Hook and an older Peter Pan. The name of the movie was called "Hook" and told the story how Peter left Neverland and got married. In it, Peter's children go to Neverland and Peter must save him. While in Neverland, his son, however, starts to "hang out" with Captain Hook. So now Peter has to save his son and battle his foe once again.

"Hook was not his true name. To reveal who he really was would even at this date set the country in a blaze; but as those who read between the lines must already have guessed, he had been at a famous public school; and its traditions still clung to him like garments, with which indeed they are largely concerned."
