No. They get paid for the time they work, but the pay is divided equally among the months so that they can still receive income during the months when there is no school.

I think that depends on which country you're thinking of. We get paid 12 months plus a Summer and a Xmas bonus, which doesn't mean we get paid a lot. If teachers don't get paid for the whole year, it's not only inhuman exploitation, they can't be asked to do things when classes are over and, believe me, there are things to be done apart from preparing classes, teaching, correcting, etc. I say, don't "regular" workers get paid for the whole year? Why should it be different for teachers?

EDIT: From the answers I've seen here until now, I think American teachers (we're talking about America mostly or only, aren't we?) should rebel. I simply can't understand how on earth a society expects people to do a good job if they won't even reward them properly? A teacher must be skilled, qualified and also have a very specific way of dealing with the complexity of a school that most people simply don't and can't have. I think it's sickening and people are probably getting much more than they deserve. I hear people complain about teachers in the US... How dare they?

We are also salary- which means anything we do outside of our 8:30 to 3:30 we do not get paid for, we have no overtime pay. And often in the summer we PAY to go take more classes.

No, they don't actually get paid for it. As others have said, they get paid only for the days they work, but often that total salary is divided into twelve months of pay checks as many people find it easier to budget if they don't have to wait two months between pay days.

They get to choose to either 1) be paid all year long but paid less each month or 2) be paid only during the school months but a little bit more each month.

NO...They get an annual salary and they can set up on how they want to get paid. All through the year or just during school time.

Yes, they do...What they do, is ask if you would like to take your pay in twelve months or just the 9 months you work...Then they devide it overall, and that is how you are paid...
