From my own experiences, hemi sync is very effective. I have listened to artists who utilize this technique and it actually does work. For Example, Mystical Sun had a New Age Cd entitled "Primordial Atmospheres" that i listened to whenever i was stressed or tired and needed a quick nap. It takes you all the way from Alpha down through Theta (which is the most enjoyable part), then to Delta, which is when i fell asleep. During the Theta stage you become very relaxed and you can feel the binaural beats as they ripple through your body. (I could feel them along my spine). Im not sure if this will have the same affect on you, but it will definately relax you, and youll wake up rejuvenated.
From Wikipedia:
Hemi-Sync is a trademark for a process developed at the Monroe Institute, used to create audio patterns containing binaural beats, which are commercialized in the form of audio CDs.
The purpose of the binaural beats is to synchronize the brain waves of both hemispheres of the brain so as to help achieve certain meditative states.
Brainwave synchronization (entrainment) may be achieved when audio signals are introduced to the brain causing a response directly related to the frequency of the signal introduced, called binaural beats. Two tones close in frequency generate a beat frequency at the difference of the frequencies, which is generally subsonic. For example, a 500 Hz tone and 510 Hz tone will produce a subsonic 10 Hz tone, roughly in the middle of the alpha range. The resulting subsonic tone may affect the state of mind of the subject.

The first answerer explained the hemi-sync process pretty well.
I'ved used some of The Monroe Institute's (TMI) hemi-sync products. I didn't like the music ones I had because they were too woo-woo for me. My favorite product was called "Sound Sleep". I listened to that tape many times and my ability to fall asleep quickly dramatically improved.
The Sound Sleep tape (not sure if they still make tapes or just CD's these days) had on one side the subtle hemi-sync sounds and also Bob Monroe's soothing voice guiding you through a process to fall asleep. The other side of the tape had just the hemi-sync and no voice.
